Quran Research/Daily Reading Assignment

Suggestion: Most people when they awake for the day begin to hustle and bustle about. Once you get started sometimes it is hard to set aside a few minutes within your busy schedule. So here is a beneficial thought that I hope will aide you as much as it does for me.

Once you are awake for Fajr salaat, and you have completed the general requirements (making wudhu, sunnah prayers, the salaat, dhikhr) take the next few minutes (10 to 15) to read a verse (ayaat) from Qur'aan and it's tafseer (explanation). Do this Daily. You'll be surprised at how easy it becomes after a few repetitions. You may increase your reading to adjust it with your own ability. See the reading/memorization/study chart below...

Weekly Qur'aan Reflection

Assalaamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakhatahu

Verse for Reflection

The description given below will inshaAllah assist you on how to reflect

Ibn Al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said in al-Fawaa’id:

Allaah the Exalted said:

Verily, therein is indeed a reminder for him who has a heart or gives ear while he is heedful. (Qaaf 50:37)

When you desire benefit from the Qur’an, then bring your heart together during its recitation, listen heedfully and have the presence of the one who is being addressed and spoken to, since it is a speech from Him, the Sublime, to you, upon the tongue of His Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam).

This is because the best and most complete effect is suspended between the following:

1. that which produces the required effect,

2. a place which receives this effect,

3. the condition which is necessary to receive such an effect and

4. the absence of that which prevents this effect from being obtained.

About The Qur'aan

The world as a whole has not got such a conclusive and comprehensive book as the Holy Qur'an, that contains all kinds of goodness, all the methods for guiding humanity to the straight path and all the means of happiness of humankind in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. Allah [may He be Glorified] said: "Verily, this Qur'ân guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh and His Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him)) who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise). (17:9)

The Holy Qur'an was revealed by Allah to his Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) in order to lead the people out of the darkness of ignorance and polytheism to the light of guidance and monotheism. He [may He be Glorified] said: "(This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of belief in the Oneness of Allâh and Islâmic Monotheism) by their Lord's Leave to the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise". (14:1)

Your Assignment and Questions

To help you with your replies from authentic sources please read the explanation from Ibn Kathir.

All week you have been or should have been reading Qur'aan and it's corresponding tafseer. So now, you should be able to reflect upon the 5, 6 or 7 ayaat that you have reviewed.

For example:  Questions you might ask yourself, to see if you fully understand what you have read...

In Surah Al-Ahqaf 46: 15 Allah says: And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship. And she delivers him with hardship. And the period of his gestation and the weaning of him is thirty months, till when he attains full strength and reaches (40) forty years, he says: "My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my offspring good. Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims."

1. In what other ayaat can you find instructions for the good treatment of your parents?

2. What is meant by "reaches 40 years."?

3. What is recommended for the servant if he reaches 40 years of age?

3. Explain the following statements:

a) His mother bears him with hardship...

b) She delivers him in hardship...

c) The period of gestation and weaning is 30 months...

d) So if a child is born in the eight month of pregnancy what is his weaning period? What about 6 or 7 months?

Ahadeeth Reflection

Narrated Abu Bakr As-Siddiq:

I asked Allah's Apostle to teach me an invocation so that I may invoke Allah with it in my prayer. He told me to say,

"Allahumma inni zalumtu nafsi zulman kathiran, Wala yaghfirudhdhunuba illa anta faghfirli maghfiratan min 'Indika, war-hamni innaka antal-ghafururrahim (O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so please forgive me and be Merciful to me as You are the Forgiver, the Merciful)."
