The common masses are always quick to praise a well-known speaker if they are impressed by him, or to denounce him if they dislike him. Their opinions are not to be trusted, for all a man needs in order to gain admiration of the common masses are charisma and eloquent speech. They have very little knowledge and consequently, they have no correct standards by which they can judge the worth of a person.

For these reasons, Imam Sufyaan (rahimahullah) stressed the importance of accepting recommendations about a person from learned, practicing scholars only.
